Historical artifacts from Troy back in Turkey
For several years Turkey was working for the retrieval long-lost historic treasures and treasures that have been brought out of the country long ago. Now 24 artifacts from the historic Troy treasure with an estimated value of ten million U.S. dollars are back in Turkey again.
In 1873, the exhibits of the treasure of Troy were smuggled illegally and brought out of the Ottoman Empire. On 01/09/2012 they came back to Turkey and are currently exhibited in the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations in Ankara. The artifacts are approximately 4500 years old and contain gold bracelets and necklaces.
Since 2009, the artifacts were in the Penn Museum in Pennsylvania. This declared to be ready to return the treasures to Turkey. As a “reward” the Turkish Culture and Tourism Ministry has promised to lend the artifacts for an exhibition in 2016 again. Turkey is willing to cooperate with museums to present the treasures to museum visitors worldwide.
The treasure will be exhibited in a special Troy Museum, that is going to be built in Çanakkale.
Already some 4,000 artifacts were brought back to Turkey since 2007. And this will not be the last.
